Flagstaff, AZ
– Kanab, UT
Miles driven: 254
Night spent: Sand’n’Sun Motel Kanab
Time traveled: 10.00 am – 5.25 pm
Grand Circle - our biggest trip so far. We left Flagstaff and were heading for Kanab, Utah.
The first part of the road was known to us, so it was a bit boring and
familiar. Same road. Well, the weather was awesome.
By midday, it was too
warm in the car, so we had to have AC on. The surroundings were amazing,
charming, and magical. (Time to time, there were billboards or settlements,
that were destroying the beauty of the land, but without those modern things,
the road would not be there.) We enjoyed the sights very much.
We left the road 89 and drove into Page. Small town without
the charm (sorry). I had my BBQ lunch, J. eat later in Mexican restaurant. We
got some information brochures from visitor’s center and were heading out. The
town was somewhat disappointing. The Antelope
Canyon (on Navajo land)
was accessible just with tour (that sucked).
We drove couple miles back on road 89 and stopped by
Horseshoe Bend. Apparently, one of the most photographed places around here.
Too many cars on the parking lot. Small hike up and then see pretty much
nothing. Bigger hike downhill and then … it:
Short drive from the Bend was
Glen Dam on Colorado River. We went thru
visitor’s center and looked at Dam.
Then we entered Utah:
We saw the turn for Lake Powel
beach access, so we drove down to the lake. It was a beach full of RV’s and
people camping. We drove thru sand road and park there. Quick look around,
picture of the car on the beach and … drive back. We took the same road and
within probably 30 feet, car stopped on the sand. It took a while, all the floor
mats and help of German couple pushing (plus one Italian) to get back on the
beach. We were really close to bad start of the trip.
More driving.
More red rock.
Still really pretty.
We got a room in the same motel, which we used when we were
coming to Arizona.
Really ugly and messy looking, but pretty clean and comfortable. We drove to
Kanab (small town and not much to do), and having some time left, we drove thru
the town and wanted to see, if there was anything else. We saw some wildlife:
It was canyon, that was home to really big animal refuge. We
as well saw cave, that was once home to native people, later got bought and
built into the store.
I guess, you cannot stop the progress (antenna on the top):
